34 weeks pregnant and have been having lots of thick discharge, how do I know its not the mucus plug slowly coming away? Whats the difference?

the mucus plug is more like one or two big globs of goo that has the consistency of an un-cooked egg white (stringy)or even thicker. It is usually a yellowy-white colour with pink tinges through it (from the blood when it comes away from the cervix)

Normal discharge is noticeably different because it doesn't have the stringy-ness or isn't big globs like the mucus plug. It can still be quite thick but is usually easily wiped away. The mucus plug will be stringy and hard to wipe away.

I hope that gives you some insight!

There's a big difference. Regular discharge is usually white and thick. The mucus plug is more like snot. (Gross, I know, but that's what it's like.) You can lose your mucus plug at any time, and *is not* a sign you're about to go into labor. And sometimes it can be pink, especially if you've just had an internal exam. Now if you have mucus with blood, call your doctor. It could be bloody show, which some women have when going into labor (I did).

The mucus plug usually has a pinkish hue to it. Thick discharge is nothing to worry about so long as its not whiffy but check with your midwife or GP to be on the safe side.
