A desktop computer will typically be more powerful for a given price as well as usually having better ergonomics than a laptop (i.e. better keyboard and mouse (touchpads are crap though pointing sticks are not much worse than mice) along with a bigger screen (and desktop LCDs tend to have better viewing angles and colour reproduction since they don't have to worry as much about power consumption)).

Desktops are also easier to upgrade and work on by your self and since they use standard components (as opposed to laptops which tend to have a lot of proprietary stuff in them) fixing them when they go wrong is cheap (thus why I wouldn't buy a laptop without a 3 year warranty but wouldn't give a second thought to buying a desktop with a 90 day warranty and would only extend the warranty on a desktop if the extra warranty were really cheap.

Desktop computers also tend to be ahead of laptops in terms of performance so if you need an ultimate box for heavy number crunching or for blowing away pixels then a desktop is probably a better choice (provided you don't need to move it around).

Performance. On a desktop PC, performance can goes on no holds barred.

On laptop, its design for low power consumption, and low heat. That two will always means compromising performance.

The best hardware available is always a PC hardware. price per performance for desktop is always better as compared to laptop. Laptop hardware comes at a very high price and still the performance is low.

Well, generally what you're paying there is for the mobility of it. On desktop you're paying for performance.

So, decide base on your needs. Get a laptop if you need to have a portable computer with you. If not, there's no reason to go for laptop.

Unfortunatly as fast as Laptops are progressing i cannot see them ever overtaking the desktop market.

Laptops are unable to handle such technologies as Quad Core processors and higher end graphics cards effectively, this is purely and simply due to the fact that Laptops are physically too small to be able to offer a good cooling system.

Laptops cannot be updated very easily and the only components which can are the RAM chips which do offer performance boosts but nothing on the scale of what you could achieve on a desktop.

Also, over clocking is very dodgy on the laptop again due to physical space constraints meaning it would be very easy for the laptop to over heat thus destroying your system.

Aesthetically, laptops are a burden especially high perfomance laptops, components such as a high end graphics card, cue the 8800 GTX are literally MASSIVE and very heavy. This would make lugging around the damn thing an epic feat in its own right.

Also speaking economically desktops are much much cheaper than laptops in terms of value for money.

So basically:
Desktops are

Faster
Cheaper
Securer (Not many people can steal them :P~)
Much Much easier to upgrade.

I hope this helped

:D

You can upgrade a desktop computer, whereas the only thing you can upgrade on a laptop is memory.
