You want unique?
Are you willing to work with a pet, take time to let it bond with you, take it out of it's cage and play with it every other day or so?
Dude I have the unique pet for you. My wife has sugar gliders. Natives to New Zealand, Australia, and Indonesia, the ones you get in the pet stores are bred in the U.S., importing is not allowed. If you're in Cali, you're out of luck- like most things in Cali, they are illegal, and illegal in some other states too. Go figger.
Sugar gliders "look" like tiny flying squirrels but they are actually a marsupial, with a pouch and all. Their fur is velvet soft, and they have opposing thumbs with velcro-like claws. They live on vegetables, with only a LITTLE bit of fruit (or they get too fat) with tofu, cream of wheat, or scrambled eggs (no oil!) for protein. The go completely bonkers over a cricket or mealworm.
One of our favorite games: wife stands on one side of the room and I the other, she tosses the glider into the air and he glides down on my back. He runs over and down my arm, I throw him back. He loves it!
You **REALLY** need to get one young, and bond with it. They can be quite mean if caged without being handled, but if you get them young they are very tame.
They are known as pocket pets or pocket buddies, it's quite common to stick them in an inside coat pocket and just carry them around with you. They are nocturnal, so most of the time during the day they stay inside your coat.
My wife sometimes throws one in her coat when she goes out, it will run around inside the coat and only peek out if curious. Freaks people out when she's in a store somewhere, but they are DEADLY cute. Great chick magnet! :-)
It's a VERY good idea to get them in pairs. They are very social and do much better when they are in pairs. Don't get a male and female though, they pop out babies in cycles of about 4 weeks!
They require lots of handling, and every now and then for no reason they bite, but it's not a mean bite, it's like "oops! I thought that was a peanut." Check out the link, this is the one we call Gizmo, AKA "fatboy."

1. Rabbits. It is so weird and so much fun to watch them hop around your house. They do not move like cats and dogs at all! They are so quiet and it's easy to train them to go in a litter box.
2. Ferrets are quite popular, but I've never had one.
3. Small monkeys are very cool. They are entertaining and they love people. I don't know how easy it is to potty train them, though. I had a friend who lived with his pet monkeys. They were great pets but his bathroom stank so bad. Probably he just wasn't doing his job to keep their messes cleaned up.
I hope this helps!
Take care,
Gayle
