I have a simple theory about music ...oriental , occidental or whatever. The moment I say its music and not cacophony , it would mean it is sonorous to my ears and that it has pleasing notes with systematic progression and a beat pattern which I can understand. By this definition I like all kinds of ' MUSIC ' and don't like any noise which is passed off as music.

Yeah...I'm a world music freak...depends on what you mean by oriental though...some people think east asian like japanese and chinese...i listen to some erhu/classical chinese opera sounds and as for japanese there's the band l'arc en ciel, and i still think pizzicato five is cute.
I like indonesian gamelan music.
I think the indian sitar sounds so mesmerizing so i listen to that kind of music.
But my favorite is Middle Eastern...Kazem El Saher...the strings just pull on your heart...the best are Turkish...Tarkan and Mustafa Sandal...Middle Eastern is great lounge music and it's just plain cool coz of the strings and scales...it feels like the notes are bending =)

I like it. I enjoy the sound of it... like from Asian movies, "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon". It just sounds so different and very mellow and soothing.
