The city of Qufu in Shandong province. The birthplace of Kong Fu Tsu (Confucius), Qufu remained an important city through imperial Chinese history, from Han Dynasty, to the end of the Ching Dynasty in 1911. Qufu was an important university town and center of Confucian learning and Chinese philosophy throughout Chinese history. It was also the sight of the Kong Miao (Temple of Confucius), the place of worship to Confucius and his descendants. The temple's complex is the second largest historical building complex in China (after the Forbidden City). It covers an area of 16,000 square metres and has a total of 460 rooms. Because any last major construction of the temple took place after a fire in 1499 during the Ming Dynasty, and at the same time as the construction of Forbidden City, the Kong Miao has similar architecture to the Forbidden City in Beijing. The keepers of the temple were the Kong family, the direct decedents of Confucius himself. The head of Kong family resided in Qufu until the second world war, when Kong family members of the 76th and 77th generations (Confucius' great(x75) grand children) fled to the Chinese Nationalist's capitol in Chongqing to escape the Japanese occupation. The family then fled to Taiwan following the Communist victory over mainland China in 1949. The Kong Family resides in Taipei today. Despite the Kong Family's absence, Qufu remains an important center of Chinese history and culture, which is being nurtured and encouraged after decades of neglect by the Chinese Communist Government. Hope this might help you, Peace
