I mean, the "46" defense was predicated on stacking the line of scrimmage and creating mistmatches. They were trying to get to the quarterback for a sack or have him panic and throw an interception/incomplete pass. Why didn't teams back in 85' focus on passing? Go into shotgun, then short, fast passes. You can't have more than 11 players on the field. When you move players on defense to play closer to the line, didn't that leave openings in other spots? Why couldn't teams take advantage of this back then?

The openings were deep, and the pressure was almost always successful. In addition, most teams couldn't get draws or screens to work because of the physical, heads-up linebackers and safeties.

You've had 22 years to study the film. The brain trusts in 1985 had considerably less time.

The real irony is that New England lost that 1985 Super Bowl, and now it's very possible they will be the 2007 champs and compared to that 1985 team.

The 46 Defense requires you have a very athletic set of linebackers and tough as nails safeties. They stack the line and are able to cover RBs and TEs. When they blitz, everyone on the field is versatile enough to fall back in coverage while pressure is being created on the QB. The defense was impressive, but nowadays it is vulnerable as well as the Cover 2, which is a whole different story.

Thats why the only game they lost that year was to who, Dan Marino and the Miami Dolphins.

But as for the scheme itself, the 46 still has 4 defenders in the secondary, so its not as simple as you are trying to make it sound. Plus the Bears had truly gifted athletes on that team. Ever heard of Richard Dent, Mike Singletary, or Dave Duerson, and Dennis Gentry? Everyone on the bears 1985 schedule has.
