4x - 2x = 1 + 4
2x = 5
x = 5/2

8 - 2x = 8 + 3x
0 = 5x
x = 0

You can simply rearrange the problems so that you get all the x's on oneside and the numbers on the other

4x - 4 = 2x + 1
2x = 5
x = 2.5

8 - 2x = 8 + 3x
5x = 0
x = 0

(Just wondering, if it was a mistype and it was meant to be a y on the right hand side, you would use simultaneous equations method)

4x-4 = 2x+1
-4-1 = 2x-4x
-5 = -2x
x = 2.5

8-2x = 8+3x
8-8 = 3x-2x
0 = x
x = 0

its just simple

4x-4 = 2x+1
4x-4-2x=1
4x-2x=1+4
2x=5
x=5/2
x=2.5

===================

8-2x=8+3x
8-2x-8=3x
8-8=3x+2x
0=5x
i.e. x=0

4x-4=2x+1
4x-2x=4+1
2x=5
2x/2=5/2
:.x=2.5

8-2x=8+3x
8-8=2x+3x
0=5x
0/5=5x/5
:.x=0
