Well its because in AIM when you basically "return" to your computer and start typing/clicking, AIM automatically sends everyone on your buddy list a message taht you have returned. If you don't want yo fiancee to see that, put a away message or make yourself appear offline.

Most likely you have software like windows messenger, yahoo pager, or some other similar chat device that starts up automatically when you start or log into your computer. If that is not the case then perhaps he has installed some sort of spy software on your pc that allows him to keep tabs on your internet activities. This type of hardware is very difficult to detect as it is stealthware and is designed to run invisibly.
If you think you are being spied on and are not OK with that, then you should check out the "Hackers Nightmare."

He is either doing this through a network connection or through a router placed in his room ie he can see the activity light on the router flash when you are connected. If he is doing it through a network connection then you need to disable the network connection. Just change the workgroup name and you will no longer be able to connect to the home network and neither will he.

When you log on a messenger, check sign in as invisible. You can also change your status when you have already opened your messenger. Select offline and nobody will be able to see you as online. You will however still be able to receive instant messages from your friends but they will not know that you are online.

Go to your Yahoo account and turn off the settings that say to show when you're online.
Make sure when you do log into IM you are "invisible" by setting that correct setting.
Good luck

You can exit the program totally so that you'd have to manually re-login if you wanted to.
If your IM icon is along the bottom of your desktop, right click it and choose "exit."
