I'm not entirely familiar with Army basic as my fiancee is in the Marines. However I know when my fiancee went to Parris Island he was only allowed one phone call to his parents to let him know that he made it safe and he couldn't say what he wanted, he had to read off of a card. After a few weeks his parents then got a cookie cutter letter that gave them the address to send letters to him. Again, I don't know if it's same for Army, but I know when I sent my fiancee letters he had to do more push ups, exercises, etc etc for the letters he receieved. I didn't want to put him through too much, so what I did was wrote a letter every day and then once a week I would send off the seven letters in one envelope. I began sending my letters as soon as I got the address from his parents, but I didn't actually receieve a letter from him until about a month after he left. Then I got one every two to three weeks. Unfortunately I wasn't lucky enough to get a phone call, but I heard that if his platoon had exhibited excellent behavior they would have been allowed a phone call. As far as keeping busy goes, I found the time passed faster once I started picking up a bunch of shifts at work and started volunteering at an animal shelter during my free time. It's also a good idea to spend time with friends. The more you do to keep yourself busy the more you'll have to write to your boyfriend about. My fiancee said he enjoyed reading my letters because it was something different than the day to day stuff that he had to do. I also tried to find different projects to work on while he was away. One thing I did was make a copy of every letter I sent to him, and would put it in a page protecter in a binder, then every letter he sent me I would put in the binder as well. I asked him to save all the letters I wrote to him, so that when he got back I could replace the copies with the originals. Thankfully he did and I have a nice binder full of letters :) He really enjoyed the pictures I sent him too! So if you have any pictures of yourself and or his friends/family send them to him. When my fiancee was on deployment I go together with a few of his friends and we made a poster that said we missed him, then took a picture of all of us holding up the poster. You could do that and send him the picture of you holding up the poster. Just find little projects to do and get yourself out in the world! You'll make it through :) Best wishes to the both of you!
