I would not say that they WERE, or in fact ARE, superior to women. There have been, and still are, some matriarchal societies where the women are the dominant group and the men are not.
I think one of the primary reasons that men have been "dominant" is because women have allowed them to be. It seems like many women, even now, are so consumed with gaining the approval of men that they turn on their own kind. Men on the other hand will put their friends before their female partners on pretty consistent basis. Ever hear the phrase "bro's before Ho's"?
Men have NEVER been superior, we have just historically given them too much power.

They weren't, but if you meant "more successful" then I might be able to give a little insight: Men had larger muscles and could boss women around, and that they did. Also, while women were giving birth and obeying men like slaves, men were out exploring and furthering their knowledge. Women have not had the same opportunities as men, because historically, women took on a submissive role in order to preserve the human race. Rather than respecting women for utilizing their ability to create life, men trampled over them (much as humans trample over nature) and treated them as maids, cooks, breeding machines, nannies, sex objects, and punching bags.

Were they? The relatively few women in history weren't any better or worse. And they invented the basics for agriculture, effectively forcing people to settle down, and triggering the civilization concept.
Besides, there's more than meets the eye with the contribution of women in history.

Because of the actions of distinguished men who devoted their life to exapnd the knowledge and capabilities of mankind, some of them realizing the impossible, others even the unthinkable making it a reality. Which person could seriously say that if a man did not built the Saturn V in a world of opportunity and equality a woman would have stepped in ?
To finally answer your question you have to specify superiority, are men superior to women at beeing gymnasts and flexible ? I think not. Men are seen as superior at mens stuff.

Historically men have gained their so called superior status only by supressing women and denying her education and the chance to go out and understand the world. Also might was right and this naturally led to the status as was then. Its not that women or men have changed their species- its just the exposure level for women has changed

I guess you mean superior in status not intellect.
Well, most societies have men as the providers and protectors of women, therefore they gain the status of having higher value than women.
HOWEVER:
The continued evolution of society and culture as to the extent of "SPECIALIZATION" has created equal circumstances where this is becoming less of reality.
ALSO:
Several tribal areas in third world countries continue to have the woman as the superior being over men. How about that!

In Pagan times, women were superior. They didn't understand procreation, and saw that women randomly and magically give birth to new life. Men could not.
Later this was replaced by male-dominated religions. From then on, it was simply a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Same reason men are superior to women in modern day politics, they apply themselves more. Just look at modern history, women have been allowed to vote for half a century, and this country (USA) is still politically dominated by men, even though women can vote without hindrance, and are the majority (52%). The number of women voting has actually gone down since they got suffrage.
Edit: Jennifer W., please name one modern-day matriarchal society.

Because they're physically stronger. That's all that mattered in the old days, the alpha male had his way. Besides the physical difference, it's hard to fight when you're pregnant or protecting your baby.
