Verbal abuse, probably no (I think other women are more likely to), but if there was any indication of physical abuse some men would intervene.
In this day and age a lot of men would never intervene in anything. Courage is not as common as it used to be.

You didn't really give enough info to answer this. Verbal abuse? Probably not. Physical abuse...like hitting? Possibly. It can be a very complicated thing to step into a situation like this. I would certainly hope that I would do something if I believed there was real danger. But since the issue isn't really the immediate danger in most cases of physical abuse, I would be more prone to pull her aside sometime later and tell her to get the hell out of the relationship. Girls have a tendency to have a hard time unplugging. This can be for lots of reasons...from the belief that she can "fix him", to cheap apologies on his part, to emotional needs on her own end. But, the truth is...if physical abuse has happened more than once or twice, it's time to get the hell out of Dodge...no matter who you are. And you should be ashamed if you bring children into a situation like that and don't get them out of there. Because, aside from whatever they pain and abuse they might or might not suffer directly, you're just propagating that abuse model to the next generation ("it's OK, because Daddy did it to Mommy...").

My husband has. The men usually back down and stop without an argument. Most abusers can only pick on women because they feel superior. When it is a man they are up against they get scared.

Most decent men would. But it's tricky. A lot of abused women can turn on those trying to help them and get confused about who they should be loyal to. But abuse is wrong and if you care about someone at all you don't let that happen.

Assuming you mean strangers--If you mean physically, I don't think MOST men would. Some would, some would call the police, and others would think she deserved it. Sad but true.
If the female is a relative then most men would jump into the situation.

Not necessarily. They would be smarter to call the police instead.
