It just seems like such an unthoughtful gift idea. Its like giving someone a broom for their birthday.

I usually wait for the first Christmas commerical of the season like someone would wait for the first robin of spring. Swiffer was the first one I saw. At the end they said "Wrap one up for the Holidays' and a red bow appeared on top of the box.

All I could think of "Who would want a broom for Christmas?"

My mother.

A few years back, she actually gave us lightbulbs for Christmas. She had been over to visit, and honestly, we don't turn the lights on that much because there was a lot of natural light. Anyway, it annoyed her, so she actually wrapped lightbulbs and gave them to us for Christmas.

I was mortified.

However, that's just my mom. She's Martha Stewart, ultra-practical, not sentimental at all. She thought she was doing something nice.

Well now that you asked, I got one last year for Christmas from my boyfriend. I love it. It is such a practical gift. Useful as can be. Use it all the time. So I don't think there is anything wrong with getting a swiffer for Christmas. If I knew someone that wanted one I would give them one.

Interesting, isn't it?
At least we live in such a rich culture that non-practical gifts are an option. At least for some of us.

There is a culture shift too: I have some 1940's and 1950's magazines in my collection, and the advertisments there at Christmas tend to exhort *the man* to buy *the wife* a cooker, an iron, a vacuum cleaner for Christmas "She'll love it: it'll make her life so much easier!"
(the women are generally expected to buy hobby items or clothes for their husbands)

Having said that I do like my Swiffer. (it's great on a slate floor) but on the whole I'd consider that a pre-or post-Christmas present, not somehtign to be gift-wrapped.

Hey, let me tell you this ...

My own sibling owns a farm (rural) and the stores there do NOT carry the Swiffer Brand items --

SO ... coming up to visit them, I put a bunch of the Swiffer Products in my Car (along with other things that they can't find in the local area around the farm) .. and guess what ...

That Swiffer was a HIT! Since that time, I have to put together a monthly package and put in it various Swiffer Pads and things!

So don't discount the GIFT of a Swiffer Product -- it really made a GOOD 'hi there, I know that I'll enjoy staying here -- so I brought up a few good things with me!'

lmao...funny you should ask this question.

I have a 13 yr old sister and for some ODD reason she LOVES to clean. I mean she cleans all the time.

Last year for Christmas she gave us her list and all she had were cleaning products and her #1 gift she wanted more than ever was a Swiffer. I AM NOT LYING!! lol
So for Christmas we got her all kinds of cleaning stuff and she loved it!

That ranks right up there for what a friend of mine from a long time ago would give as of 2 years ago she has given me toothpaste, deordorant, a trashcan, a laudry basket, mock turtleneck long-sleeve christmas themed shirts (I can't stand anything close on my neck) and a spanish version of the retarded movie "Christmas Vacation" or something like that and some movie I had NEVER at all seen advertised on tv and could read the discription of what it was about because of graphics on the wrapping of the video, YUCK!

I wouldn't mind having one because everyone needs a fast convenient way to clean and be done.
