It seems like jay leno and conan o brien should be able to come up with their own stuff, why don't they?

Not only do they write their own stuff, they screen what the writers come up with so they can be themselves through the writers' material as well. It's impossible for these stars to go impromptu every night, though. Sounds awfully greedy that the people who make DVDs can't credit those who write the material more.

I'm getting a kick out of these ancient reruns. Leno's hair was black and Letterman actually had some hair. Last week Mel Gibson was on.... dang, he was good looking back in the mid nineties. But.. about the writers. How much money do they need? Two of Leno's senior writers make $500,000, and all writers make around $ 100,000 a year and more. So why all the kvetching?

They are writers themselves and belong to the Union. That's why they are staying away. Years ago Johnny Carson went back on the air during a strike but he wasn't part of the writers union. Same with Carcon Daly so that's why he went back to the studio.

Because they are the stars of the show and one person would have to spend quite a while coming up with all their material. Really, this takes a team of writers for an every night show like both of them do.

actually, I thought the same thing. The way they come up with funny stuff while talking to guests, I thought they would be funny enough on their own to write their own material. Does anyone out there know the progress in the writers strike? is it even close to getting resolved?
