It is cumbersome to answer all of the questions, but an outline is appropriate. Tides arise because the moon (and to a lesser degree, the sun) pull the water more than the earth on the near side, and the earth more than the water on the far side. When sun and moon are working together, you get higher tides (spring tides); when working against each other, you get lower tides (neap tides). Because there is friction in the ocean, the highest tide is not directly under the moon, but lagging a bit; the lag exerts a pull on the moon which causes the radius of its orbit to increase about an inch a year.
