I am going through a move away case and I'm moving out on my own with my kids. If I can't make it in California even though I prove to exercise responsible budgeting, I may be able to move. Does that mean bare minimal like just things we need or is there any slack for things like a small family vacation, a cell phone and things that we want but that aren't really extragavent?

With what I earn plus child support, I can't afford to stay in California, even in an apartment. I got a lump sum for some back pay and that's what I'll be living on for the most part unless I'm able to earn more somehow.

I have three small children and California is VERY expensive and I was ordered to stay in Orange County.

I intend to be responsible but we have been living in poverty for so long and have gone without. We have never had a family vacation or any thing beyond very minimum needs.

Stuff like having a huge truck payment every month is irresponsible, as are huge costs for clothing, entertainment, meals eating out, etc., so you don't want to have those. Start with what your real, basic costs are and see where you stand.

Responsible budgeting entails knowing that you can feed, clothe, shelter and educate your self and children.

You also need recreation. What about holidaying at home by taking the children to picnic in the park, go to the beach, library or some other cost free place. It does not have to be expensive. It only has to be fun.

Why not let each child choose a special activity. Give them a budget for the day. What about having a cooking day at home? A party where they cater? A holiday at your parents?

All the best fot your future, You are doing well if you are budgeting responsibly. Congratulations.

Responsible is spending less than you earn. If you can't afford a mobile phone without using credit, then you can't afford a mobile phone.
