Do you live in SF? Check to see if your neighborhood has permit parking, which allows you to keep your car on the street longer than the usual two-hour limit.

Otherwise, the city-owned parking lots have the cheapest rates. They include the Sutter/Stockton garage, Fifth & Mission, etc. Here's the full list:

Why not park your car at one of the Caltrain stations ( such as the one in Mountain View or Palo Alto, for example, and take the train into and out of the city? While you are in the city, you can walk, ride the Muni, take a bus, ride the cable cars, etc, and you will save yourself a fortune in parking fees, not to mention headaches from parking in the wrong places. Parking at the Caltrain lots is very inexpensive- only about $1.50 per 24 hour period. The trains run every 15 minutes during the morning and evening rush hours on weekdays, and every half hour during off peak times, like at noon. On weekends, they run every half hour, all day long. I used to live in San Jose, and this is what I did when I would go to the city for the day. I'd park at Mountain View, and take the train in and out of the city. I'm planning to visit the area again next February, and I will want to go into SF at some point, and I undoubtedly will do this at that time.

Hope this helps you out. Try it- you will find it to be a lot cheaper than paying for gas and parking fees.

I just came back from a visit there; have been there at least 20 times.

If you are there as a tourist you might try getting an inexpensive hotel/motel in Millbrae near the BART stop there. I did that a couple of years ago, spent about $70 a night, walked 2 blocks to BART and used it to get to the city. Then used public transit or took cabs when that made sense.

Parking is outrageously expensive in the city, not to mention that driving there is not fun at all. And trying to park on the street is, well, trying...

Find parking lots that offer an "early bird" low price. There are many lots in the city. Sometimes the cheapest lot isn't the closest, but it is close enough to make the discount worth the walk. Drive around the area you will need to be parking in and see what lots there are and what they have to offer.

If you're going to be staying in a hotel just leave your car parked in their lot and either take a cab, trolley car or BART to wherever you want to go. The cab can take you to the nearest trolley car stop or to nearest BART station.

Check the different garages, and their times and fees. Some charge more at different times I believe.
