My company is going through the mess with a few counterfeit money orders. The biggest problem that we've found is not the fact they bounce, not the fact that they know our bank info (no-one can do anything strictly knowing your bank account info without passwords/signature/etc)... it's not even the request for goods (we give a strict 1 month clearance rule for all cheques/money orders unless they have a good record with us in previous payments).

The BIGGEST problem is the bank! They charge us one exchange rate for when the money is deposited, but then charge a *different* rate after the bounce, and the money is taken out! So, in essence, with no fault of our own, hundreds of dollars get sunk into bank fees out of OUR pocket. Then they even have the audacity to close online access to our account so we can't do day-to-day transactions.
Their defence is that the matter has become a fraud investigation, which is fine (understandable and acceptable, even), but we haven't used the money - we have plenty of savings in the bank. We even told the bank "Let's deposit it, we won't use it, but please find out if they'll clear." and their actions still make it out as if we're to blame for this, instead of being the victim or the company in the middle. We're in the process of fighting the bank's actions on this. ...and people wonder why I hate dealing with big banks.

So there's my story - caution advised. Best to rip it up and throw it away.

Use the money order, hold back on shipment for 2 months--that gives the bank enough time to verify if it's a fake, stolen or whatever. Once they confirm that it's accurate (it WILL take more than 4 weeks) then ship the item.

Foreign money orders can take up to 6 months to clear the bank, get back to their country of origin and not be sent back due to being falsified. So you'd need to wait longer if it's from outside your country.

As to the customer, notify them that due to recent fraud and money order problems, the money order they sent needs to clear the bank before you can ship at this time, but that you'll notify them the day you do ship the item.

Well I can tell you this. If you are "working" for a company where they are sending you money orders for you to cash, and then you have to send them money by western UNION
because they are saying they are a foreign company and can't get payments etc THIS IS A SCAM!!! BIG time!!! Do NOT cash it because it is a counterfeit money order and you will be in serious trouble. I guarantee you this. It is a known scam!!!!!

If the money order is drawn on a local reputable bank and you are not required to do anything but cash it, that is, not required to supply your banking info no matter HOW MUCH THEY SAY YOU WILL GET, not required to submit ANY of YOUR OWN MONEY AT ANY STAGE... heck go for it. HOWEVER, if you are to give any personal info, money, banking, id ANYTHING. DONT... hope that helps. I got the tips from the RCMP

Just keep it .Don't spend the same.Observe for about two months and see if anyone writes back to you to return the money which, might have been sent to you by mistake...... or your address and the address of another person are alike.
Just sit tight after receiving the money.Don't discuss with others. If you accept this, it doesn't mean you are stealing money of someone else.ok?

CASH IT, if it is real. The cashier will tell you if it is not, and a cashiers check has already been paid by the person sending it. You have nothing to loose but time in going to see.
