I currently have a checking and savings account at wells fargo. Would I be allowed to open a checking account at another bank? Say...bank of america, washington mutual, etc...

I have checking accounts at 4 different banks. I use them for different things. As long as you keep your accounts in good standing and don't get black listed you should have no problem getting as many checking accounts as you need.

I have 1 with a bank that is national for traveling. One with a state bank for local use, two with different credit unions so that I have access to their loan networks.

Go right ahead. Many people do.
Some people I i know use one for the regular stuff, and use another for stuff like insurance, property taxes, etc etc.,the things which don't come up every day. It makes it easier to budget.
Another benefit, switch back and forth and when the statement comes, not as many checks are outstanding. Easier to balance.

Of course you can open a checking account at multiple banks. I have a couple open at different banks myself, one for personal use, and one for my small business; although you don't need a reason at all.

You can have as many accounts as you want. But, be warned that if you make to many depoists over 10,000.00 you might be flagged for a look by the FBI
