we decided a few years back that instead of buying each other expensive gifts for christmas and birthdays, that we just give a token on the day, and once a year we buy ourselves a "luxury item". it works for us. some of the things we have bought are a really nice fish tank, a big screen tv, a good surround sound system, the computer, this year we are buying a gps for the truck.

we do the same thing - just a small something for Christmas and then when taxes come back either something we absolutely NEED but wouldn't be able to afford otherwise (I hate it when THAT happens) or something that we want and wouldn't ordinarily buy

for birthdays, we just go out to our favorite restaurant for a nice prime rib dinner - too expensive to go except as a rare treat - last time we went - for 3 people - $110 including drinks and tip

Sometimes we do, sometimes we buy a
luxury item. This year I bought my husband an antique piece for the top of his dresser, he doesn't know about it. It is actually an insert from a pre-Civil War desk, that will hold all his stuff and even has secret compartments. Pretty cool. He is getting me some really good tools for wire working because when he asked, I told him I wanted them. But last year we bought a digital camera, and next year it will be a gps for our truck, also. If we don't buy it before then.

I completely agree with you, and I wish I could convince my married kid to do this.

Until we finished our education, we simply didn't have the money to buy a surprise that really wasn't what we really wanted or had to return when it didn't fit.

After our 2nd Christmas we decided to just what you do and buy what we want or need anytime of the year.

I bought 4 night gowns last month and my husband bought 3 pair of pants and 2 shirts and a jacket that he needed and we both agreed that those items are our Christmas presents.

I will wear one of my new night gowns on Christmas and love it.

I would be very upset if I couldn't pick out a piece of jewelry and have to act happy about it.

I don't know if I'm making sense, but I do agree.
