Since we're talking hypothetically, I would have to say:

Babe Ruth (pitcher) vs. Babe Ruth (batter)

it already happened back in an all star game back in '93 or so. phillies first baseman john kruk facing the mariners giant lefty randy johnson. one of the all time greatest at bats ever. it was hilarious.

but i think the best would be something that happened so many times, but never got recorded on film.
josh gibson and leroy paige.
both men were the sports greatest showmen in the 30's and 40's. leroy paige would bring in all of his fielders to the dugout and just pitch against great players like gibson with only a catcher. leroy was convinced he could strike out any batter. any batter.

Babe Ruth vs Babe Ruth would be amazing. However, I'm also going to give some more "realistic" answers.

Randy Johnson vs Bonds/Ken Griffey Jr (lefty lefty)
Randy Johnson vs Ruth (even better L on L)
Clemens vs Ted Williams (intimidation vs patience)
Cy Young vs Ty Cobb (most wins vs best average ever)
Pedro Martinez vs Ted Williams/Babe Ruth/Lou Gehrig
Bob Gibson vs Babe Ruth/Barry Bonds/Ken Griffey Jr
Bob Gibson vs Tony Gwinn
Cy Young vs Tony Gwinn/A-Rod/Ken Griffey Jr
Bob Gibson vs Ty Cobb
Clemens vs Ty Cobb/Shoeless Joe Jackson
Pedro Martinez vs Ty Cobb/Shoeless Joe Jackson
Walter Johnson vs any of the batters above.
Finally... Babe Ruth vs Lou Gehrig/Mickey Mantle/Joe DiMaggio/Roger Maris (imagine Babe vs Maris for his 61st HR chance? That would make great headlines.)

I could go on and on... this is so much fun, but I'll leave the rest to others.
