If I remember correctly, people tend to favor success over failure. there is nothing wrong with failure, many lessons have been learned from it. But most people would rather do the successful thing.

People in general think that success equates to security, status and well being. They think that by obtaining a job or career that pays them well they will be able to accumulate success and status. Wealth is not success. Success to me is doing something that you love and doing it to the best of your ability. If you get joy out of it then you are successful. It is about being able to love yourself first and about letting others in to love you. It is about loving others with no terms or conditions. This is what true success is. It is not about the high paying jobs, the long hours, the business trips and missing family things. Yes you will be secure in the sense that you have money and a name but really at what cost are you willing to get these things.

I think that since people are Social animals, many of us have the innate "need"-to have some degree of "Standing" among our fellows. A vicious cycle develops- where the desire for "Attention & praise & respect"- drives us higher & Higher up the ladder of Success, -until we either stop because we're too old (or exhausted) to go any further, or we "fall off" when we realise the futility of our actions... TRUE "Success"- comes from within us, when we can be personally "satisfied" with a job done well.... :)

I think many people have no idea why we exist, and out of fear they try to create meaning in their lives through achievement of wealth and power. It's as if since no one can understand the real meaning of life they need to create a system that measures meaning. That system of success measurement gives them comfort from the bizarre and strange nature of reality.
