Charles Whitman Aug 1,1966 Killed 16 people wounded another 30 shooting from the observation deck of the clock tower at Texas A&M university. Today Mass murder, while not quite a common, everyday occurence, does not have the same impact on the nation as this did over 40 years ago.
I would have to give second place to Richard Speck, Who, Two weeks earlier, systematically stabbed eight student nurses to death in Chicago. One of the women was able to hide under a bed and avoid the same fate. she was able to provide police with a discription of Speck including a born to raise hell tatoo on his arm. I was 14 years old, living outside Chicago at the time. This one actually had a bigger impact on me. ( I still won't get a tattoo) Living in the reigon, but I think the Whitman murders may have been a bigger shock to the nation.

The guy that shot up the McDonald's in San Diego years ago still has the record, I think. Please don't try to break it.
