I've always thought about how all major competitors usually have red or blue in their symbol/logo

Some examples:
Democrats [blue] and Republicans [red]
Canadian Politics: Liberals [red] and Conservatives [blue]
Coca Cola [red] and Pepsi [blue]
Walmart [blue] and Kmart [red]
Canada [red] and States [blue, to some sorts]

Any other examples? I'm sure theres a lot more

Basically, what I'm asking is, is there a reason behind this or is it just a big coincidence?

Aside from the fact that red and blue represent opposite ends of the visible light spectrum, and the symbolism that might represent, there probably isn't much significance.

[add] Another example is boxing with the red and blue corners.

Well there aren't that many bold colors to choose from - what, green, red, blue - yellow is kind of lame, brown? Black? I don't think there's any special meaning to red and blue. THey just contrast well and are good bold bright colors.

These two hues are classified as primary colors.

Red; because it's a bold, warm color.
And blue, the opposite of red, is a cold color.

Together, humans instinctively recognizes these as opposites of each other.

They are bold colours, they are opposing colours, and they are both primary colours.... I suppose they could not use red and yellow (also a primary) because they are too similar, and yellow tends to get a bit washed out sometimes anyway.... You would think green would be a big contender also, but it not a primary colour so I suppose....

Interesting observation....... perhaps the two are the most striking contrasts, colorfully so compared to the black and white contrast.
