I don't know what a plimsoll is, besides it being a kind of shoe.

A ship floats because of the air inside it. It displaces water equal to its mass, and the average density of the ship is less than the average density of the water, due to the air inside it. if you remove that air and replace it with water, its average density will exceed the water and it will sink.

It has nothing to do with the weight of the ship. You say it is heavy. Is it heavier than all the water surrounding it?

sometimes they don't! (titanic) and Plimsoll line - waterlines to show the level the water should reach when the ship is properly loaded.
