You don't have to take them before you get pregnant but it is a good idea to take them after and no you are not at risk for birth defects if you haven't taken them before you got pregnant. Women years ago never took any vitamins and babies were still born healthy. I never took vitamins while I was pregnant and my babies were healthy and big.

You are supposed to start them at least several weeks before conceiving, since the folic acid is used a lot in the earliest development and it needs to be in your system already in order to be sure. But if you are already pregnant, that is OK. Folic acid is just insurance, as it were, rather than something that is required. But now that you are pregnant, take supplements meant for pregnancy, do not make your own cocktail of them and do not try to make it up by taking too much now.

i don't know if you need to take vitamins but you defiantly need to have enough folic acid in your diet before you get pregnant, a lack can cause birth defects at the beginning of pregnancy so they are probably not necessary throughout. most women have problems b/c they don't have enough in there diet and by the time they know they are pregnant it is too late to stop the problems it has caused.

Folic acid is very important to take during pregnancy to prevent birth defects, and even before when you're thinking of trying to conceive.

Here is a link/video that can give you more info.

You take them during pregnancy so the small amounts needed for a developing baby can be used. Doing them before and not continuing during the pregnancy won't help much.

A lot of doctors say that you should take something before you get pregnant to prevent spina bifida in you unborn baby. if you are already pregnant don't worry just start taking something now that has it. You should continue to take them throughout the pregnancy
