I'm a junior in highschool, and lately we have been talking about all the differnt scholarships that are available. The thing that is brought up most is the fact that there isn't a scholarship for being "white". Umm why should there be? I'm not racist, I'm actually African American and "white". I'm very proud of both my ethnicity's. So don't even go there. I would like everyones oppinion on "white" scholarships.

I actually some what agree with Noah B.
A white person honestly has a better opputunity over any minority, just because they are white. It is sad, but very true. Has anyone ever realised how "white" based america is?
I remember flipping through the channels with a friend and wild n out was on. she was like wow why are there only black people on this show?
but if you flip to the hills or laguna beach, all you see is white people. Sadly no one says a thing because that is normal to see. My point is some white people don't see society as other races do.
minorities only get there own scholarships because we couldn't get into any other college's at one point . All colleges accepted were whites. It wasn't until the 60's, when we able to get into colleges with a scholarship.
So don't say it's racist that you don't get your own scholarship because at one time "whites" were the only ones accepted to schools.
geez, it's one less scholarship you recieve, BIG DEAL!

I am white , and i would say white people do hold to a culture of protecting them self and self service in that , so to see someone receiving something not available for them they often complain of mistreatment..instead of reaching out in compassion and happy for you and the opportunities you have they complain as if they are neglected..spoiled white world has been privileged for so long it does not even realize its own selfishness and self centered reality, but also please do not hold it against them for being unenlightened to a greater truth..as we all must live and learn what is right
as far as white scholarships there are 100,000+ on a level playing field available to them , and it is ignorant to say blacks have not been an oppressed people group, but also not all whites are responsible for history and only today..and in a true condition of equality no racial requirements would exist on either side..a distant future perhaps

Yeah, I agree with you, and I'm a white guy. People talk about how there's poor whites too and all that stuff about "being the best qualified". But these scholarships are just balancing out the fact that white people on average are more affluent than other groups, so there are white people who are less qualified but "earn it" just because they already have money.
Also there are scholarships and reduced tuition for many students if their parents went to that college. Some colleges will admit a student that had parents that attended a college over students that are slightly better qualified. Those policies alone help white students more than minorities.
I think we already have "white scholarships" because there are plenty of scholarships for local communities where the student population might be almost all white.

I don't think there should be white OR black (or any other minority) scholarships. The real issue is poverty and the fact that an overwhelming majority of impoverished Americans ARE minorities. As such, I think scholarships should address the issue of poverty and giving people a chance to improve their lives, regardless of race.
In terms of minorities in television, I don't think the answer is more shows featuring primarily minorities. Of course, you should have some such as in cases where an environment WOULD primarily have minorities. But really, I think the issue is getting minorities integrated into mainstream television and in a positive role.
Overall, I think the goal should be to do a better job of integrating minorities into higher paying jobs. Segregating them on the basis of race doesn't solve the problem. I'm also not suggesting cultural assimilation. I realize different races/ethnic groups have different cultures. But giving out scholarships pretty much implies that impoverished people want to assimilate into better educated and more economically stable groups.
In any case, I think the focus should be on poverty, not race.

The fact that there will be race based scholarships will only further alienate one race, no matter if it is a black only, white only, Asian only-- whatever.
Having a race based scholarship is racists. What would Jesse Jackson do if there was a white only scholarship?
Until all races quit pursuing this angle there will never be any complete racial harmony.

i am sure it has to do with how admitting is done in colleges..... not by merit anymore if you have any black in you at all you have a better chance than a 5.7 AP Student b/c of your race and they have filled the white student 'quota' ... and just to clarify a few things before i get shot down
You can get a 5.7 GPA, AP is college courses in H.S., and colleges DO have to take so many of each race regardless of merit.
AND just a thought why are there black scholarships and not White..... because the NAACP would sue b/c once upon a time there were slaves and now you deserve money for it??? there were some white slaves too and the Indians slaughtered the pilgrims....guess i should sue the Indians for money?(this means nothing but to prove the point of 'fairness' -i know life is not fair but everyone can try to do their part and use their morals).... by no means am i racist so i am not here to offend anyone but i think everything should be fair accost the board. if it happened to you personally that is fine, but to me college spots and scholarships should be on merit- no colors involved if you worked harder than some one else to get in you deserve it.. if it ends all up being a black school then they earned it! visa versa any one who earns it deserves it!

Scholarships should be given based on two criteria points. Academic achievement and economic class. That's it. Take race out of the equation completely.

I think giving any scholarship based on race is basically racism, regardless of color.
But much more racist than that is saying that it's okay to give scholarships to blacks simply because they have different color skin but you can't give it to whites because that would be racist. That doesn't even make sense!

Simply put, because a lot of Republicans are racist. Also, a lot of Democrats are racist. Catch is, Obama was a Democrat and in turn, his political views lined up with most of the Democratic party...go figure. Nobody is telling you to feel guilty about being white. That's stupid. I don't feel guilty that I was born to two people who have advanced degrees and live in an upper middle class socioeconomic bracket. BUT I do notice that not everybody was born into the same privileged lifestyle that I was. Not everybody was able to afford the opportunity to go to a private school when the public schools in their area sucked. And because they were not able to afford that competitive education, they are consequently ill-equipped to handle getting into a good college, and so on and soon. And because I recognize this inequity, I do my best not to shame those who have suffered/are suffering from that situation. Because I will never understand that hardship and it is unfair and unrealistic for me to tell another person to how to deal with that burden if I myself have not successfully navigated that situation on my own. It is unfair and unrealistic to tell somebody how they need to grieve about their situation. It is unfair and unrealistic for me to discount the feelings of another person. My job, as a privileged person, is to validate that person's feelings and shed light on their situation. In no way am I trying to enable lazy behavior, but the fact of the matter is: a person cannot achieve if their is not opportunity to achieve. And a lack of a good/competitive education takes away a person's opportunity to achieve at that level. The same goes for skin color. It is a fact that in our society today, people are still treated differently based on skin color. I myself have been told that I shouldn't apply for STEM program because it statistically proven that "people like me" don't handle a rigorous curriculum very well In my naive head, I assumed my 3.99 GPA just wasn't going to cut it. I started thinking back to all the AP classes I had taken, my executive roles in the National Honor's society, my job as an RA, and my countless extracurricular activities just weren't enough. It took my mother asking the woman "what were the statistics based off of" for me to know I was so wrong. The answer my mother and I got was "Your people... minorities ma'am. Black people mostly." You see...that was only 6 years ago (after Obama was elected for the first time, mind you) when it seemed like ever white person in America wanted to shout from the rooftops that America wasn't racist anymore because we had a black President. And here I was, having somebody tell me that I wasn't going to do well solely because I was black. As a black person, living in America, who has had many other encounters like this one, it was amazing seeing "one of us" make it to the highest office in the land. To see somebody who had gone through a lot of the same prejudicial stuff that I had and had somehow made it through successfully. And the fact that he was a Democrat was icing on the cake. I didn't even have to choose between wanting so desperately to see the first black president and my political views! I hope my two cents helps you see a little more clearly as to where a lot of black American's minds are on this subject. God Bless.

There are scholarships for nearly all races who can't afford to pay their way. Those scholarships are limited to those races.
There are scholarships for whites who can't afford it too, but those are open to ANYONE.
It is considered racist to offer a scholarship only to white people. It is not considered racist to have a black scholarship or a **** scholarship.
That little detail is the problem white people have. Not that we don't have a scholarship, but that others are allowed to do it and we aren't. It isn't fair.

I'm a freshman in college, i received a full ride scholarship, and it wasn't because I was black, it was because of my act score. There are a lot of scholarships out their for black people, the reason being is because white people attend college in way higher numbers than we do, so the government is trying to up our numbers. At my school (if they don't have a certain number of black students a year their funding goes down), this holds true for a lot of other public universities as well. Honestly I don't think there needs to be white scholarships, and I don't mean to sound harsh or bias, but there is a much higher need for black scholarships. Unfortunately blacks make less money than whites as well (for reason I wont discuss here) There are also scholarships for gays and lesbians, i like the idea of this as well. My ex girlfriend received a 5,000 dollar scholarship for being a lesbian who played sports, (she was white by the way:)
