I think the basic principle is that having a pet alleviates some of the isolation that people might feel, therefore lifting depression that could set in. I've seen many cases of elderly folks who are much happier because they feel loved and needed by a pet. Or, any age really when they feel the unconditional love of a pet, it's soothing. Considering all of these factors I suppose that could add some time onto your life. Supposedly tests have been done and a person's blood pressure is lowered, their breathing is slower when they are sitting relaxed and petting a dog or cat. That does make sense to me. Lower brood pressure takes pressure off the heart, etc. I would agree with some of this and common sense wise it seems right. I've seen it first hand with those who have loving pets in their lives. Loneliness, stress, and isolation can be killers for sure.
