There is certainly no reason to either drive or take a taxi to O'Hare. It's often faster and definitely easier to take the 'L'. If by "downtown" you mean the Loop (south of the river), just board the blue line in the subway on Dearborn Street, and catch any O'Hare-bound train. Trains run every 5 - 10 minutes all day long, and every half hour overnight. If you live north of the river, take the red or brown lines into the Loop. If you take the red line, exit at Jackson and walk through the connection tunnel to the blue line. If you take the brown line, go to Clark and Lake, and walk down the escalators to the blue line. There's a lot of construction on the blue line right now, so you're better off budgeting an hour (rather than the 45 minutes others have said) to get out to O'Hare. It's still a fast, easy trip. The cost is just $2.
You'll arrive right in the middle of the terminals, underneath the O'Hare Hilton. Take the escalators up, and you can take the people mover to whatever terminal you need. When you return, follow signs from baggage claim that say "Trains to City".
(Buses, by the way, are not a good option to get from downtown to the airport. The buses that run to the O'Hare area mostly serve the northwest suburbs and actually go to the Rosemont or Cumberland 'L' stations rather than to the airport itself.)

Very easy! Just take the Blue line CTA subway train directly from downtown Chicago to O' Hare airport, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for only $2.00 Also, if you ever need to get to Midway airport the Orange line travels between downtown and there. Good Luck!

As one of the previous posters said, the CTA Blue Line can get you to O'Hare in about 45 minutes.
Since you said you are fairly new to Chicago, here is a link to the CTA Trip Planner...how to get from your condo/apartment/house to anywhere in the city (including O'Hare). (http://tripsweb.rtachicago.com/).
If you haven't done so already, be sure to get yourself a CTA Fare Card...you can store money on this card so you don't have to pay cash on buses or at the el station.
Good luck!

The Blue Line goes to O'Hare. You can pick the Blue Line up anywhere along Dearborn in the downtown area, and it will take you to O'Hare in about 45 minutes.

If you want to get to O'Hare for a flight take a taxi. If you are curious of its location in relation to where you reside find a bus stop, and when the first bus stops ask for information. If you know the name of the bus company call the head dispatcher who should tell you which bus goes to O'Hare.
