The Civil Rights Movement and Vietnam, along with Dr. King's death, contributed to her switching parties. She described herself at that time as a "mind conservative and a heart liberal." She switched parties in her senior year at Wellesley, but had been questioning her political idealogy and where she fit into the scheme of things since she was a freshman. She didn't make that decision lightly. She talked once about how she couldn't sit still for the thinly veiled streak of racism that ran rampant through the Republican Party.

EDIT:
For the brainiacs that suggest it was because of Bill:
She didn't even meet Bill Clinton until she went to Yale. She became a Democrat long before that.

Well, in school she probably cared about doing what was right for the country, but become corrupt and chose the corrupt party later on. (At that time the democrats were racked with corruption, which is why the Republicans slowly began to gain more and more power... people tend to forget just how corrupt the democrats were theres a reason that Clinton is the only Democratic president in recent memory....

According to her registration records or according to Hilary? I would not trust anything she said past , present, or in the future… Its probably a blatant lie. If she is called on it then she can claim that her mind is JELLO and she was at home baking cookies for her husband.
Edit: In 1994 the republican lead by Newt Gingrich and the contract with America ran a first time national election for the senate and house. They won 55 seats in the house to take control of both houses… GREAT YEAR. Hillary is mad because the 60’s generation was ousted from power. BUT she is the one last hope for the BOOMERS to run the country… I hope she fails big time.

Yes, Hillary was a registered Republican and changed when she met George W. Bush....who was drunk & stoned in a bar in Texas. Together they left for the Woodstock Arts and Music Fair held at Bethel, NY in 1969. After returning home they parted both company and political parties! Her being pregnant, she wanted to have an abortion....but he wanted the baby to be born...then watch it go without and eventually get beaten or starved to death! That is the difference between a Republican and a Democrat! Choose your poison!

What do you expect? Her and John Kerry must have gone to the same school together: they're both 'flip floppers'! Hillary votes for the Iraqi war, then starts bashing Bush for starting it. She voted for it, yet, to turn the public's attention away from that fact, she hides it by making it look like Bush was the only one who was responsible for going into Iraq in the first place - typical conniving, deceitful democrat!

She switched in college, maybe because she was in anti war march, and decided to switch parties?

She married Bill and he was a Democrat and a politician...tough to be a member of the opposing party with your spouse

Honestly, would that matter to you? I don't like Hillary at all, but if I did this wouldn't bother me in the least. Many people change their political affiliation throughout their life, it doesn't mean anything other that they've changed their views. As long as they don't flip-flop back and forth on issues, they should be able to change their opinion.

Her parents and grandparents were all high members of the republican party - so growing up she was raised that way, then found the true light in college, not to mention Bill!
Sounds reasonable doesn't it - I wonder the same question about Mitt. Why all of sudden did he turn republican, after being "more liberal then Kennedy" when he ran for his seat in the 90's.
