Unfortunately, our gas bill is so expensive here.......we turn it right off......and use lots of warm cozy blankets!! Only problem is, it is darn freezing in the morning......have jump out of bed and turn on the thermostat.....then jump back in bed till it warms up enough to take the edge off!! Only then can we think about putting on the coffee!! LOL!!! Too be warm!!!!

I actually do not set my furnace at night, because I cannot do so. I live in a building where the heat is set automatically, and even those who own the place in which they live (like myself) have no control over the heat.

"Optimal" depends on what temperature is comfortable for you. Obviously you will use less energy the colder it's set. In general, you want it set cooler during the night, when you're in bed, and during the day, if no one is home. It's flat wrong that "It takes more heat to warm the house up than to keep it warm". That's why they sell programmable thermostats, to turn the heat down when you don't need it.
