I am of the opinion that this sentence needs to be changed.

oh, you meant the OTHER sentence.
"This" refers to the first sentence, your question.
"The following" would refer to your sentence about lung cancer and smoking.

It's really hard to discern what you want when you write in incomplete sentences with incorrect capitalization and punctuation.

That is already a fact, so to make it an opinion you'd have to add something like, "Smokers should consider quitting because...."
