The first marriage was recorded in Mesopotamia in 2,350 BC. Christianity took it on in 1563 at the Meeting of Trent where it was first recorded as a sacrament. Therefore marriage has been NON religious for 3,600 out of 4,000 years. Christianity doesn't own it. Christianity just STOLE it. Marriage has always been a Civil matter. Marriage is a Civil contract. It doesn' t matter a hill of beans how religious your cereemony is, you aren't married until you sign that paper in the church office. You also conveniently neglect that little fact that in every jurisdiction marriage equality has been enacted, there's a clause in the law that allows Churches to refuse to perform the ceremony. That means that your scenario of churches being sued is totally a lie. Which isn't surprising. You Fundies always lie about marriage equality, because you know that you haven't got even one rational argument to bring up. You also conveniently neglect to mention that in 10 US States, and in Argentina, Belgium, Canada, Iceland, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, South Africa and Sweden, the definition has successfully been changed, some more than a decade ago, and despite you Fundies' dire warnings, wailing and gnashing of teeth, the sky still hasn't fallen. Your argument is invalid.
