Similarities: They were both extraordinarily long lasting. They both ruled during very prominent and productive periods of their respective cultures.

Differences: the Chinese emperors ruled by means of what was called, "The Mandate of Heaven". As long as they were perceived to have this mandate, they ruled with impunity. BUT, any one who could overthrow a ruling dynastic family, could usurp their power; and if successful, would then be perceived to have received the "Mandate". Traditionally, a son inherited the emperor ship from his father, uncle or whoever: a woman could not be a ruling Emperor(ess). Throughout its over 2,000 yr. history, imperial China only twice, had women who actually ruled: one way back when - who ruled for only a short time, and is not an important figure in Chinese history - and the other, "Tzu Tzi" who was the last "ruling" personage of imperial China.

The Roman tradition was not rule by direct blood relation; but each emperor chose his successor prior to his death; nevertheless, blood connection was usually paramount in the selection.
