the terms for these are called honorifics
and mostly these answers are right but partly wrong
the meanings are right but in japan they deal a lot with formal and informal speech so as not to seen disrespectful.
kun and chan are used to denote that you know the person well. it is often paired with a first name (first names are usually only used within a family or with the other persons permission other wise it's considered disrespectful)
while sama and san are what you would use if you don't know the person or don't know the person well to show respect and formality and are usually paired with a last name
when used with a first name it shows familiarity but great respect (hence a first name paired with senpi)
senpai means -one who comes before such as a person who out ranks you at work, in school, or someone who has more experiance in a given field (but yes it can be used because the person is older agian that experiance thing)
hime is princess and they got it right when naming the family members but agian san is "with great respect"
and it is not uncommon to call an older person "aunt" or "uncle" the same as you would prehaps you parents oldest friends
is it confusing? yes to westerners it can be but there are books that teach these types of things (including what type of bow to use and who to use it with) mostly for the business world who deal with the Japanese

The meaning of san, sama, kun, ans chan are honorifics.
San is the equivalent of Mr. or Ms. and can be use with ether a man or woman.
Sama is the equivalent of lord or lady, a more respectful way to say someones name again can be used with both.(As Kenshin in Rurouni Kenshin would say Dono is an even more respectful way.)
Kun is use more for boys names as Chan is the opposite. At time you will see it reversed and thats okay also.

kun and chan are more use if you know the person as a friend and with family, as San is used in general and sama used with people who hold a high ranking in the world.

They are used to honor people.

Chan is used often by girls for friends and boyfriends.

San is just like saying 'Mr' and 'Miss'.
