I use one all the time As with everything it really
depends on personal choice. But I can assure you
NOT useing anything WILL Screw up your computer.
Mine used to overheat it seems that there are air
vents on the bottom of the laptop If they are restricted
air does not flow. = Overheating. Since I have limited
space I needed something that would not take up
much room. The large desk type holders were out.
As were the ones that have fans since I only get
about an hour on batteries I needed something that cooled
without power. It then occured to me that since I have seen
so many computers with broken screen I wanted to protect my laptop when travelling. This NARROWED THE FIELD TO NONE. So I had to make my own needless to say it works very well and I no longer worry about overheating.
I hope this does not sound like an ad for my lapkitty
Whichever you finally choose or even if you choose none
What I am trying to say is do not use a laptop on your lap
or anywhere that is not a had surface Even a large book is better than nothing. Since you will surely overheat the laptop
without a solid surface. Hopefully you will do your research and find one that fits your particular needs. For info on cooling and Notebook screen protection Much of what I learned is on my site. Links are below'

Hope this helps:-)

using one right now...its frickin' awesome! Mine's kida kidney-shaped and made of walnut wood with a black detachable lap-conforming pillow on the bottom. I used to put my laptop on a large atlas and used that as kind of a table...that sucked.

Hi. I use a bread board, very inexpensive. I keeps the vents clear and the heat from your lap.
