How many years are portable propane tanks good for refilling...I know there's an expiration date, but how many years of life does that date give the tank?

New tanks are good for 12 years from date of manufacture[in US].After that they can be re-certified.There are 3 ways to get a tank re certified,two of which are not cost effective for a 20 pound tank.So they normally get a visual certification,which means that a trained technician will inspect the tank for damage,check that the valves are correct and working properly and there are no leaks.After this it will be marked with a new date followed by the letter E [E indicates a visual inspection] the tank is now good for 5 years from the new date.It can be reinspected many times as long as it is in good shape.

Tanks do need to be certified every 5 years. Your local gas company will certify it for a small fee, then they stamp the top of the tank with a some code number. I have had one now for 15 years, still looks good (no rust)
A few years back i had to have the valve replaced. Not sure why but ALL valves on ALL tanks had or have to be replace with the newer valve. The newer valve is a 3 handle valve. The older ones are the round type. Make sure you have the newer vavle on it.....if not.....they wont fill it. Hope this helps you.

when you get them refilled they will tell you if they are unfillable
