Yes I'm sure the profits from Exxon-Mobile could go a long way towards providing universal health care. The problem with this scenario is that Exxon is no different from many other large corporations. Why should they be singled out to pay for something our government should be providing? I'm all for taxing corporations and seeing that tax money spent on programs that benefit the majority of Americans but appropriating all the profit of one corportion is illogical and unrealistic.

As far as going green to protect the environment, I believe the only way to make this happen on a large scale is to make it unprofitable to do otherwise. This would require MUCH more stringent environmental regulations and penalties for violations. Companies will not make the switch until they're losing money by not having their practices be environmentally sound. On the flip side, those companies that exceed the minimum regulations could be rewarded with subsidies to encourage further compliance. Individual citizens could be motivated in similar ways by heavily taxing products that do not meet environmental standards (either in production or the harm they inflict after disposal).

The profits from Exxon-Mobil would pay for some of the tab for universal health care for a few days. Then Exxon would go out of business and you'd be walking everywhere you wanted to go. The profits and the profit motive are what makes America work. Without it everything stops.

Did you know that the governments - state, local and federal - make more money from the sale of a gallon of gas than Exxon-Mobil does. And, they don't risk anything doing it. What a sweet deal So, before you want to punish the hand that feeds you, think twice, and watch out for the hand that taketh away. It belongs to Uncle Sam.

No. Exxon-Mobil is a private company with investors and holders of stock. You can't just take away their profits to pay for a government health care. The reason the price of gas is so high is because we are competing on the world market for the same oil. India and China are now big users of oil. The only way it will ever be less for us is if we drill for our own oil here instead of letting Mexico and other countries siphon off what is under the U.S.

Oh yeah, right. Keeping the gas prices high hurts working people and the poor as well.

Universal anything is a bad idea in government. We need to be more self sufficient instead of being dependent on the government for our needs.

I like some of those above, but when the oil company makes 10 cents on every dollar the government makes a quarter of that same dollar.

Exactly what are you saving the environment from? A naturally occuring cycle? It is arrogant to claim you can do anything to alter the climate of the earth, by having one country submit to a liberal agenda.

Yes, several times over.

It's time to re-evaluate our priorities as a nation.
