I changed the water this morning. Could he be dying? It's about 8 inches long. Will it hurt my other fish? He's about as long as my finger and fat. Help!

I've never seen this happen before it's brown colored but if he's just pooping, boy he's taking a royal dump! Do I need to get it off him?

Its poop, don't worry it will fall on it's own.

You said it yourself, he's taking a royal dump. It doesn't necessarily mean he is dying, just that he overate. Nice of him to do this after you just changed the water!
Did you remember to dechlorinate the water?

Try and take your finger and pull on it gently. If it comes off, congratulations, you have poop on your hands....literally.
Otherwise, it would be wise to call a tropical fish store and ask.

We have two ponds and anytime the fish had long "poop" it was when they were close to death. I'm not trying to bring you down ...just being honest.

most likely poop, but if it isn't coming from his vent, and on the end it has a "V" then that is an anchor worm....
but I still think that it is most likely a major poop

It's just poo and will fall away naturally. Not real pretty, but completely normal :)
