I havn't had alof of experience with Shellac, but the times I have used it (Zinnser - Straight - not cut with alcohol)) it has come out great. I gave a light sand between coats.

I have used it to cover my workbench ( currently a 3/4 piece of MDF) and it sealed the surface perfectly which makes cleaning up the workbench surface cake.

I have also used it on top of my drill press table ( 4 pieces of 2x6 placed side by side) and it turned into a great looking top. Note, no stain was used just sanding and 3 coats of shellac.

Has anyone tried cutting shellac with denatured alcohol? Would you recommend it?

Has anyone mixed shellac and anything else, maybee a Minwax stain? Tung Oil? Danish Oil?

I read on the can of zinnser Shellac (clear) that a universal tint can be added to teh can up to 5% of total volume i beleive. Do you think a trace and i do mean a small amount of color tint, maybee blue or red would look nice on a finished wood piece giving it a clear tint look?

Why mess w/ success.
It can be cut w/ denatured alcohol.
Often used a very thin first coat as a "spit " coat which makes it easier to lightly sand off "hair" in prep for multiple thinned top coats which can be built up for a finer "furniture" finish,
Have found alcohol soluble powder stain works well & gives a clearer tint, but why not go w/ Mfrs advice.
Cheating , but have used Tung oil & alcohol to mak a 'French polish".
pcbeach is right , it will gum up if just of you just mix up a batch & "paint" it on
French polish is rubbed on in many thin applications & even the "classic "method uses linseed &even a dab of olive is sometimes used.
Love old school finishes.
Best regards

I have used pure clear shellac years ago..being a 37 year experienced painter... zinser is a great product and yes can be tintied..I always have it tinted to 50% of the color formula of the paint I use for the finish, when using zinser as a primer/sealer...You do have to use universal colorants..do not use acrylics etc...and yes..denatured alcohol is exactly what I use as a thinning/cutting agent...do not mix shellac with minwax stain..for the sealer in it is a parrafin base..it will coagulate, the same as tung oil or danish oil..stick to the proper base...

Its better if you file them off because soaking them in acetone really isnt going to work all that well
