Bears are classified in the Order Carnivora and in the Family Ursidae.

By the ORDER classification, PINNIPEDS which are of the same Order Carnivora and suborder CANIFORMIA are the CLOSEST relatives of bears. Pinnipeds include the walruses, seals and sea lions.

Other relatives of BEARS belonging to the same SUBORDER CANIFORMIA would include dogs, foxes, skunks, stink badgers, weasels, otters, badgers, raccoons, and the red pandas.

Actually, elephants are not that closely related to hippos.

Lions, tigers, leopards etc. are all cats (in the Family Felidae), and coyotes, wolves, foxes are all dogs (in the Family Canidae)

The bears (polar bear, brown bear, black bear, sloth bear, etc.) are in their own Family, the Ursidae.

Bears are considered to be part of the Suborder Caniformia within the Order Carnivora.

They are most closely related to the pandas, as well as the sea lions, then the weasels and dogs.
