I have a 2000 dodge stratus with 2.4 engine.
For the last 2 months it has been starting hard. Turns over 4 about 10-15 seconds before starting, then runs rough for 10 seconds, strong oder of gas.If you shut it off and restart within 5 minuts its ok, wait 10 or longer, starts hard again and the oder of gas.
Drives fine unless you try to accelerate quickly then it spits and sputers, let off the gas a little and its fine, this part has been getting worst.
Check engine light has not came on.
Blew the timing belt last year, I have a non iterfearance engine, but for some reason the coil blew and the computer quit. New timing belt new coil and a used computer and I have been fine 4 10 months.I travel alot for work so my mileage adds up, 30, 000 in a year, car has 160,000 miles.
I just changed the plugs and that hasent helped at all.
Anyone have an idea, I can do most of my own repairs when I have an idea of what it is. I am thinking electrical, maybe a senser,
Thanks i advance

Have the computer checked. It may be telling the car to give it more than needed gas when it dose not need it. You will get to the bottom of it. But hopefully the dodge man will be around tonight to get you the solution.

nevertheless feels like the gas pump. defective gas pump verify valve or the filter out is amazingly clogged. the rest could have tipped of a sensor and shown up on a scanner. reliable success.

good detailed question but a tough one. find out where that gas odor is coming from for safety reasons. I'm thinking a fuel pressure problem(pump or filter) or injectors. good luck
