In stock form they were available as the 409 and 409 s code motors the 409 was rated a 340 hp the 409 s was rated at 375 hp,I have asked two people that own these cars one is an s code car and can not find out what the s means possibly sport code, remember in 1961 375 hp was a lot of horse power, also the 409 shares very little in common with the 454 and visually are easy to tell apart, great cars and good motors but back in the day 40,000 to 75,000 was the life expectancy of these motors and many were used for Drag racing and didn't even get close to that.

You could get the Impala with a six cylinder engine, a 283 v8 engine, a 327 v8 engine or a 396 v8 engine. You probably need to get the VIN in order to find out which it came with and there are at least 4 different configurations for each of the v8s.

A short stroke engine that was one of the strongest of its time. Often used in drag racing. It is very rare and super expensive to modify or overhaul. Could be worth some money though.
