WILLIS DeBONE

A Poem for a
Christmas Eve

From a third floor hotel room a single light shone
Out the window where watching stood Willis DeBone
Thick snow from the storm, unabed, fell past
As it had through the hours since day before last.

A wife at home waited this cold Christmas Eve,
But the airport was closed and nobody could leave.
The streets were now empty, and left all alone
To stare out the window was Willis DeBone.

Two hours before, on the corner, a light
had come on in the church that was off to his right.
And stamping their feet, a few folks who had tried
the walk from near-by were seen going inside.

So drawn by his thoughts, by his mood, and the glow,
He'd left his hotel for the church through the snow.
Inside, while a child had held up a great star,
All sang, "We Three Kings Who From Orient Are."

A woman then read Matthew 2, one through twelve,
And God, while a man prayed, had started to delve
Into things long delayed in the heart and the mind
Of this business-form salesman lately confined
By a blizzard in regions where angels "unfurled"
Still sand their good news o'er this sad "weary world."

"God's always provided,a" the preacher'd begun,
"A star for each pilgrim, each traveler, each one;
A star for the lost who are finding their way,
Though they know it or not, to the One who once lay

"In Bethlehem's crib, which was empty until
Itr was filled by the One who's still able to fill
Each heart that has stored; so unsafe, so unsure;
Its treasures of frankinscence, gold, and of myrrh.

"Are you empty tonight? Has your emptiness grown?"
"Yes, it has. Yes, it has." murmured Willis DeBone.
"If so, in exchange for your treasures He'll give
Forgiveness of sins and a new life to live."

So he watched and now thought as the winter storm fell,
And as tolls called the hour from some distant bell,
And 'til bowing he settled the things long ignored
And that night made Christ Jesus his Savior and Lord.
