My gas furnance usually cycles on and off when it gets cold in my condo. When the furnance use to go on it ran for a while and shut off after the temprature in the room was reached. After it shut off after about 30 seconds the it would turn back on again for about 10 seconds the fan would go on and turn off. It has not been doing that today does that mean the furnance is going to overheat?

Don't be too concerned with the heater. When it turns on it takes a few minutes to heat up the plenum (air box) when a certain temperature is reached the fan turns on and heats up the rooms. It could shut off for a second or two if the temperature falls a little. Your furnace sounds just fine. All you really have to do is make sure the air filter has been changed.

Are you saying the fan NEVER comes on? If so you need to have it checked. It should not over heat though. There is a temp control inside that if the internal temperature gets too high due to such a reason, that will shut off the burner. If the burner is not shutting down and the fan isn't blowing, then you have big problems and need to have that looked at ASAP. Shut the thing off until you get it fixed.

Potential serious problem. What should happen is this: no fan, no flame. The sensor that detects the blower tells the gas valve to shut off, killing the flame, so that the heat does not build up in a small, enclosed space and damage something. Make sure you verify actual operations visually, like seeing the flame , the fan motor ( unless the sound is obvious ). This safety device, and others need to be checked .

The fan sometimes comes back on after a cycle because there is residual heat in the plenum. There is a high limit control that will shut down furnace if burner runs without fan coming on at all.

Sounds more like a thermostat issue. You may need to replace it. Heaters have override systems on them so if it gets too hot it shuts the power down and shuts off the gas supply. It does need to be checked out. Look in your paper...they run ads all the time to do low cost ( $39 - $59 )service checks on your system.

It could be a limit switch problem. Turning off then back on for only 10 seconds is not normal.

How old is this furnace and what make model is it?

I would have a HVAC tech take a look at it.
