I have two boys 4 and 6 yrs old would like to get them something that they can have fun with but first and formost helps them with their learning. I want my 4 yr old to get a headstart and get him prepared when he starts pre-k next year. And my 6 yr old now in the 1st grade could use some extra help. I know there is lots of stuff out there like these leapster, v-tech, that hook up to your tv, handheld and and and but it's not so easy to choose which one to get. Does anyone own any of this learning games? What would you suggest? It should be kid resistant if you know what I mean cause I read that lots of these games work with cards and such that are very easy torn and just plain simple distroyed. I want something that works and if possible lasts more than just a month or so

Children learn from almost anything they play with. The power tool is human interaction, this increases the probability of extra learning because:
1. They will model you.
2. It is emotionally gratifying.
3. They learn problem solving.
4. It creates a social and emotional bond with your kids.
5. You learn about them; learning styles, modalities of learning, etc.
6. It's inexpensive
7. It's expensive to you and your children if you DON'T INTERACT WITH THEM.
8. The kids will learn from each other, and support each other.
9. You are using higher learning skills such as "synthesis, evaluation." Look at www.ask.com and ask about Bloom's taxonomy. Use the information to create play activities for them.
10. Sooner than you think, they will grow up and NOT want to interact with you!
11. Be a teacher and a learner to and with your kids. Love 'em and they'll love you back!
12. Time is precious and you can't get it back.

V Smile is great. I also have a 4yr old boy and he loves it and there are so many games for him to choose from. He has been playing since he was 3. My 8yr old even plays with it. Of course different games. So there is lots of room for growth with this system, not just for one age. I even get in to it sometimes.

I have gotten the leap pad, and v-tech game unit... it was quite some time ago though. They change so quickly...
The boy I got them for is seven now, and he still uses both of them.
I think your choice should depend on what the kids are into...
Video games... V-tech, reading, etc... leap pad.
Hope this helps??

My son had the quantum leap pad and it was great. He passed it on to his nephews and they love it too.
