they eat tons of grubs and insect larvae. they eat their weight in food everyday due to high metabolism,

they are beneficial, they areate the yard, and of course there are moles that are beneficial too. you could just not expect a perfect yard, in fact the people who have artificial, I mean well manicured lawns seem to spend all their free time (after workign and caring for their big homes) on their lawns because by upsetting the natural balance, they have to put more pesticides, and herbicides and fertilizer (cause they remove the leaves via bagging and having them hauled away or dumping somewhere else. and of course the water requirements rise due to monocultureing of the lawn.

I have tons of moles voles and probably shrews, I have trouble distinguishing one from another when they are running a zillion miles an hour away from me. when I mow with the riding mower the mower levels out the yard crushing the little mounds they leave, doesn't seem to hurt them, and bugs are seldom a problem for me. I have alot of snakes too, they eat the mice and baby rabbits (tho I think the baby rabbits are so cute I found a nest of them in my garden once and they were so soft. they were scared but didn't bite or anything, I did however manage to scare their mother away for a while.)

my yard seldom suffers any problems, I have a polyculture of grasses, some weeds (which I think are pretty they have pretty flowers) etc, but when I mow you can't tell what is the grass or the weeds as the grass still predominate.

and with all the roses I have planted and other plants the yard is a mixture of textures, colors and patterns. I figure in about 5 years I will have my yard pretty much the way I want, but of course I may change my mind about something and change it, after all gardening is a constantly changing landscape.
