Has the stock market brought a significant return to you, or has it given you a loss? I don't have enough money to make a significant return, but I took a look at about 10 of my favorite stocks' past performance in the last 5 years, and they all have grew in value.

Overall in a word, positive return. It all depends on your diversification and your propensity to risk. Typically, averaged over time the indexed S&P yields roughly 8% annually. Not bad.

My 401K from 2003 to date has yielded about 10 percentage pts annually. Plus I've toyed with some Sirius stock and was lucky enough to be in the black.

Looking to get started, I suggest Jim Cramer's book Mad Money, very digestable and a good read.

My retirement portfolio has grown from 30K in 1999 to over 100K. Factoring in approx 30K in additional contributions over that period, my 30K from 1999 has more than doubled and that's with the bear market from 2000 to 2002. Things look very unsettled right now, a lot of volatility up and down, but I'm very bullish over the next eight year period. If I maintain my present level of contribution, I expect my plan to be worth 300K or more in 2015.

I don't look for significant returns, just steady ones.

Like Muncie, trading stocks is how I make my living. I typically earn an annual return of 50%-60%.
