when trillions of $$ are at stake, they will do anything to save face. Hanging a dissident and making up a cover story is a simple thing.

It's hard to know the truth. Perhaps the Chinese still put great stock in "saving face".

According to the news, he hung himself. Hard to know if he did it willingly, or perhaps he was told his entire family would be killed for embarrassing the State if he did not.

I will never forget a story a read in Political Science back in college. The Chinese were cracking down on badly-performing factories. One factory that made refrigerators had a terrible record. Their products was always substandard.

The Communist Party officials visited the factory, ordered their guards to take the entire management to the back wall (including a woman), and they were summarily shot dead.

Reportedly, the next crop of management took their job more seriously, and the product improved greatly.

(Just wistful thinking, but wouldn't it be great if car manufacturers had the same sort of incentive to improve their product?)
