Currently any proposed deal with a cash component in excess of $1 million is supposed to be approved personally by the commissioner. In theory he could deny such a trade, but AFAICR Selig never has.
Kuhn did deny some player sales back in the day, but he was a doofus.

The Commissioner will allow anything that exceed $1 Million. This trade sounds plausible and it would probably be the right trade for the Yankees. It would be hard to let go of a very good young prospect; Melky Cabrera, and Philip Hughes to the Twins for a near veteran pitcher.
If the Yankees DO get Johan Santana this will be the trade and some money to the Twins organization. If not, then either the Twins will keep him or the Red Sox will get Santana for Ellsbury.

They could, but won't. I think the Twins have overplayed their hand a bit and even the Red Sox have cooled on trading for him. The Yanks had the better deal on the table as Ellsbury and Lester were not going to be in the same deal so the Yanks proposal was markedly better. The Twins don't want that million the Yanks could give them; they want players at a low cost that are impact and inexpensive so they at least get something for Santana as they cannot pay im $20M a year. if he hits the market. What would be interesting if he does hit free angency and the Yanks sign him for 2009 without giving up Hughes...that could happen if the Twins hold onto him!

no the yankees will have to give up another prospect since all the trades that have been proposed by the yankees are a rip off. santanas the best pitcher in the league the twins deserve more

my guess is that the twins will not trade santana anymore. they explored the market for his trade value and didnt get an offer close to what they would need to trade him , they well sign him to to a five or six year deal worth about 120-135 mil . everyone says that the twins cant afford this but remember when kirby puckett became a free angent they gave him a contract which was the biggest alltime at that point , mark my words red sox and yankees fans he will be a twin for atleast five or six more years and you are gonna regret not giving up your prospects that will never pan out

It won't matter because in the end here's the playoff picture....
Central-Tigers will finish with the best record in baseball and have home field advantage throughout (AL wins All-star game)
East- Boston wins the division by 10 games
West- Angels
Wild Card- The Tribe gets in just past the Yankees.
ALCS- Boston V. Detroit
Detroit in 6
World Series- Is there a National League?

of course they can, but trading their prospects is the wrong thing to do right now, they had a great year in the minors and they should use this for a three year period to grow players and become the yankee team we know and love.
