I'm trying to right a story about a newspaper boy, and need to know the value of a shilling and what amount of money he might take for selling a paper. So what is the value of a shilling compared to a Us dollar today, and how much might he have sold a paper for in that time period?

A shilling was 1/12 of a pound. Back in 1800s, the pound was generally worth about $4-5, so a shilling would be about 35-40 cents. As to how much it is in today's terms, who knows; the official CPI data in the U.S. goes back only to 1913. Just to give you an idea, though, 35 cents in 1913 would be equivalent to $7.39 today...

The pre-decimal shilling became worth 5p when Britain converted to decimal in 1971 and the shilling circulated freely with the new decimal 5p (as well as the 2 shilling 'florin' which had parity with the new 10p coin) well into the 1980's as both coins were the same size. Only when the 5p and 10p coins were re-minted in 1990 and reduced in size did the older pre-1971 shillings and florins get withdrawn from circulation. Rare they are not, there are millions lying around the country. A shilling was worth 5p in 1990 and they will not be worth much more than 5p now, unless it is in mint uncirculated condition.

A shilling would have bought a good hot meal, comparable to about $8 today. A newspaper probably sold for a penny or two. A shilling was 12 pennies.

"May you" should learn to construct a sentence. I do not believe "may you" is a proper substitute for maybe.
